7-Eleven's Free Slurpee Day is canceled due to COVID-19, but here's how to get a free frozen drink

We don’t need every new-fangled techy-toy to come along. But there are some that help us stay healthy, connected, and have a blast. A few suggestions USA TODAY

The annual 7-Eleven Day, aka Free Slurpee Day, has been canceled but free frozen drinks are still up for grabs.

While the coronavirus pandemic led the nation’s largest convenience store chain to cancel its in-store birthday celebration and one-day freebie giveaway, members of the 7Rewards loyalty program will get a coupon for a free medium Slurpee added to their accounts Wednesday, July 1.

"The personalized offer is redeemable the entire month of July, allowing customers the opportunity to treat themselves when it’s convenient for them, while helping us practice physical distancing in stores," 7-Eleven said in a news release, noting the offer is redeemable once per member.

The annual tradition has been held on July 11, aka 7/11, since 2002, 7-Eleven’s 75th birthday. It has been the company’s busiest day of the year, with millions of visitors, Marissa Jarratt, the chain’s senior vice president and chief marketing officer, said in the release.

7-Eleven also plans to donate a million free meals to Feeding America, which is considered the largest domestic hunger-relief organization in the country.

“Gathering nine million of our closest friends in stores on one day just didn’t feel right, but I am heartened that we now have the opportunity to help the communities and neighborhoods that have been the lifeline of our business since 1927,” Jarratt said.

There also will be deals throughout the month on the 7NOW delivery app including $5 whole pizzas and a free Slurpee from July 7-11.

7-Eleven also is piloting a Fuel Loyalty program at participating locations in North and South Orlando Florida, North Texas and Woodbridge, Virginia, the chain announced. The program is designed to "provide contactless payment options to reduce touch and drive instantaneous savings at the pump."

Ordinary Wizarding Levels (O.W.L.s)

At the end of fifth year, each student sits an Ordinary Wizarding Level (O.W.L.) for each of the classes he or she takes. These are standardized tests administered by the Wizarding Examinations Authority the teachers may proctor exams outside their own subjects but do not attend the Ordinary Wizarding Level (O.W.L.) in their own subjects.

Each O.W.L. has a theory portion, and for applicable classes a separate practical portion is given, so that many O.W.L.s are in two parts, although only one O.W.L. score is given for each subject. See the individual classes for the details of the material covered in the individual exams.

Bastille Day

Our editors will review what you’ve submitted and determine whether to revise the article.

Bastille Day, in France and its overseas départements and territories, holiday marking the anniversary of the fall on July 14, 1789, of the Bastille, in Paris. Originally built as a medieval fortress, the Bastille eventually came to be used as a state prison. Political prisoners were often held there, as were citizens detained by the authorities for trial. Some prisoners were held on the direct order of the king, from which there was no appeal. Although by the late 18th century it was little used and was scheduled to be demolished, the Bastille had come to symbolize the harsh rule of the Bourbon monarchy. During the unrest of 1789, on July 14 a mob approached the Bastille to demand the arms and ammunition stored there, and, when the forces guarding the structure resisted, the attackers captured the prison and released the seven prisoners held there. The taking of the Bastille signaled the beginning of the French Revolution, and it thus became a symbol of the end of the ancien régime. Bastille Day is celebrated on Wednesday, July 14, 2021.

July 14, often called la fête nationale in France, became an official holiday in 1880. From the beginning, speeches, military parades, and fireworks, along with public revelry, were part of the celebration. The slogan “Vive le 14 juillet!” (“Long live the 14th of July!”) has continued to be associated with the day. The holiday came to be celebrated in the former French colonies and is observed in those places maintaining links to France. French Polynesia especially came to be known for its adaptation of the holiday to its own culture, with singing, dancing, and drumming performances and competitions held throughout the month of July. In addition, Francophiles worldwide have taken up the observance of Bastille Day, celebrating with dinners of French cuisine, for example, or with concerts of French music.

ERRATA

An error in transferring raw data from the Economist Intelligence Unit to the 2014 CPI computation files affected three countries. In the case of Saint Vincent and Grenadines the CPI score was revised from 67 to 62. The error made it appear that Samoa had the requisite 3 data sources. However, it did not have the necessary sources and so has been dropped from CPI 2014. Saint Lucia, however, was not included in the published 2014 CPI, though it should have been included.

This affected the published ranks of 21 additional countries/territories by one position.

All scores and ranks have been corrected. All content referring to the countries in question has also been amended.

The source description document has also been updated to clarify the underlying questions asked by the CPI sources and how this data is used in the CPI calculations.

How Sliced Bread Became the 'Greatest Thing'

W hen sliced bread hit the market, American consumers weren&rsquot sure just how great it was. On this day, July 7, in 1928, a bakery in Chillicothe, Mo., was the first to sell pre-cut bread using Otto Frederick Rohwedder&rsquos invention: the automatic bread-slicing machine.

While an advertisement touted it as &ldquothe greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped,&rdquo customers were wary. According to the author of Why Do Donuts Have Holes?: Fascinating Facts About What We Eat And Drink, the loaves failed to fly off the shelves, partly &ldquobecause they were sloppy looking.&rdquo

Aesthetics aside, sliced bread in the pre-preservative era also went stale faster than its intact counterpart. Rohwedder came up with a solution: U-shaped pins that held the loaf together, making it appear whole inside its packaging, according to the New York Times.

Still, some people were bewildered by the concept itself, according to the Smithsonian Museum, where Rohwedder&rsquos second bread slicer resides. (The first fell apart after six months of heavy use.) &ldquoThe idea of sliced bread may be startling to some people,&rdquo a 1928 story in the Chillicothe newspaper acknowledged. &ldquoCertainly it represents a definite departure from the usual manner of supplying the consumer with baked loaves.”

Another ad offered instructions for the confounded, per the Times: 1) &ldquoOpen wrapper at one end,&rdquo 2) &ldquoPull out pin,&rdquo 3) &ldquoRemove as many slices as desired.&rdquo

But, after a few improvements to the slicing machine, loaves became less sloppy-looking and sliced bread earned its place in hearts and homes across the country. By World War II, Americans were so hooked on the convenience that its disappearance&mdasha wartime conservation measure meant to save the hundred tons of steel that went into slicing machines each year&mdashcreated a nationwide crisis. According to TIME&rsquos 1943 account, the ban on sliced bread provoked as much ire as gas rationing did. Per TIME:

U.S. housewives&hellip vainly searched for grandmother’s serrated bread knife, routed sleepy husbands out of bed, held dawn conferences over bakery handouts which read like a golf lesson: “Keep your head down. Keep your eye on the loaf. And don’t bear down.” Then came grief, cussing, lopsided slices which even the toaster refused, often a mad dash to the corner bakery for rolls.

In fact, the unpopular ban was lifted just two months after it went into effect. The New York Times heralded its removal with the headline, &ldquoSliced Bread Put Back on Sale Housewives&rsquo Thumbs Safe Again.&rdquo It’s wasn’t long before Americans were using sliced bread as a point of comparison for greatness.
