The Invention of Logo

History has witnessed a world of famous logos. Some of the logos are so famous that they will be always remembered. This process of highlighting business image is not new. It has been practiced for ages.

The word logo means a name, symbol or trademark, which is designed for easy recognition. It all started with a cipher consisting of a single letter, and later a design or mark consisting of two or more letter intertwined.

Greece is a country of symbols. It is famous for its mythical symbols that war used to describe the history and lives of pharaohs and his decuples. Archeological survey shows that many early Greek and roman coins bear the monograms or logos of rulers. The most famous imprint on the coin is the sacred monogram, which is formed by the conjunction of the first two Greek letters of XR, S, T, O and S, (Christ). Even the hub ages were enormously productive in inventing cipher for religious, creative, and marketable use.

It was in the thirteenth century traders started using designs, which evolve from plain cipher to trademark for trader and merchants. Some of the premature exemplar of logo design are goldsmith’s marks, masons marks, watermarks. Logos were created according to the jobs.

I've done researches on some of the most popular logos (for me) and their history.

McDonald's
Who would not know this very popular logo? This is one favorite amongst a list of known restaurants.

The McDonald's Golden Arches logo was introduced in 1962. It was created by Jim Schindler to resemble new arch shaped signs on the sides of the restaurants. He merged the two golden arches together to form the famous 'M' now recognized throughout the world. Schindler's work was a development of the stylized 'v' logo sketched by Fred Turner, which was conceived as a more stylish corporate symbol than the Speedee chef character that had previously been used. Nike
Simple, Fluid and Fast. These are the words used to describe the “Swoosh” in the Nike logo that has become one of the most recognized symbols in the world. The first Nike logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for just $35. Phil Knight, founder of Blue Ribbon Sports, Inc., hired Davidson to design a logo for a shoe stripe. Though the design did not enthrall Knight due to time constraints, the Nike ‘Swoosh’ logo was selected.

The Nike SWOOSH logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek Goddess of victory, Nike, who was the source of inspiration for many great and courageous warriors. According to legends, a Greek would say, "When we go to battle and win, we say it is Nike."

Originally, the mark was referred to as ‘the strip’ but was later changed to ‘Swoosh’ to describe the fibers used in Nike shoes. In the spring of 1972, the first shoe with the Nike SWOOSH Logo was introduced. Later, the Nike logo got registered as a trademark in 1995 and has become the corporate identity of Nike Inc. Adidas was founded in 1924 in Germany by two bothers Adi and Rudolf Dassler. The company was first named Dassler shoes and later became Adidas. By the Dassler shoes being seen in the Olympics this really helped the company get it’s name known. However, in 1948 Rudolf Dassler leaves to start his own company which is now known as Puma. Once Rudolf left his brother came up with the famous three stripes logo and changed the name to Adidas.The 3 stripes were created to keep the foot stable, but ended up being the logo. Throughout the years Adidas was seen in the Olympics, and it was the leading brand making their shoes highly sought after by Olympic athletes. In 1978, Adi Dassler passed at age 78 and his wife Kathe ran the company. Six years later Kathe passed and the company was left for their son Horst Dassler to run, and three years later Horst passed at age 51. After Horst’s death Adidas ran into some major financial problems, and later Bernard Tapie comes to make an attempt to save the company. [source]

Starbucks
Starbucks Corporation is a coffeehouse chain based in the United States. Named after a character in the novel Moby Dick, it is the largest coffeehouse company in the world, with 7521 self-operated and 5647 licensed stores in 39 countries. The current company logo, modeled after a 15th century Norse woodcut, is a mixoparthenos, or "twin-tailed mermaid, or siren as she's known in Greek mythology. The company and the logo have an interesting history.

Starbucks was founded in Seattle, Washington, in 1971 as a local coffee bean roaster and retailer called Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spices. Howard Schultz joined the company in 1982 and was inspired on a trip to Italy to develop a similar espresso bar and coffeehouse culture in the United States. To advance the concept, he founded the company Il Giornale three years later. In 1987, Schultz purchased Starbucks, merged it with Il Giornale, and renamed the company Starbucks Corporation. The logo on the left is that of the Il Giornale company. As you can see, the Il Giornale logo is somewhat similar to Starbucks logo i.e being circular and having a band.

The original logo, as seen on the left, the Starbucks siren was topless and had a fully-visible double fish tail. The original logo has raised some controvery because of the bare chest, but the logo continues to appear on some of the products like the Starbucks Anniversary Blend 1 lb coffee bags. Both the original logos seem to be perfect on wooden crates.


In the second version, her chest was covered by her flowing hair, but her navel was still visible, and the fish tail was cropped slightly. The logo also inherited the stars from the Il Giornale logo.


In the current version, her navel and chest are not visible at all, and only vestiges remain of the fish tails.


Sirens

The siren daughters of Phorcus or Achelous were said ti live on an island surrounded by crags and rocks, They used their beautiful singing voices to lure sailors to their deaths. The sirens were describe various ways, as having the bodies of birds or beasts. Some depictions of them show them as double-tailed mermaids (see statue of Mixoparthenos, below).

I think it means those who put it there believed themselves to be descended from royalty, or perhaps from whence royalty also descends. You mention coats of arms, Melusine was included in heraldry also, in various guises. The Etruscans also had their Melusine as well, a mother goddess, a protector, a connector of worlds.

In fact, the more i think about it, the more it fits my understanding of the manuscript, it would be an equalizing idea, stating that everyone has descended from water fairies, royalty or not. A very humanistic idea. This also fits with regard to the fish nymph, it could simultaneously be seen to depict Anaximander's fish mouth human origin story, which i see as having been located in the Red Sea, which bridges Africa and Asia, the Mixoparthenos origin of Scythians near the Black Sea, being the join between northwestern Asia and eastern Europe, and the Melusine story, bridging western Europe and neareast Asia, and now, the other side of the world (in the Starbucks logo and all that has gone on since the time of the manuscript). They all discuss mythological origins and the idea of following genealogic lineage and geography to get to the present time and place.

The juxtaposition of the Melusine myth adds the water nymph idea into Anaximander's story, which pulls in his teacher Thales' idea that everything comes from the element of water. This does seem to be a point made by quire 13, at least insofar that water connects everyone everywhere to each other, in loops, no less. Anaximander did not believe in this primordial water idea, however, he was a proponent of the ether or some other intangible element being one from which all others arise. Today we know that everything on our planet was begotten essentially from stardust, so that idea was not wrong, just obscured by a lack of technology and the understanding that it brings along with it, (ie physics, chemistry, biology), hence the mythology to fill in the gaps in knowledge. This may also be why works by Homer, Ovid, Virgil, and others also seem to be evoked. Scylla, Pyrrha. and the connections and travels from Egyptian myths to Greek myths to Roman myths. a history of the early world.

So, if that fish mouth water nymph is in fact portraying these ideas, then the idea that all the nymphs in the manuscript stand for populations of people over time would fit in with this idea, and it becomes evident that it is proto-history that is being portrayed. This explains the lack of cultural icons, since it is prehistory, the unknown time before the times we know of. In terms of quire 13, it is where the earliest civilisations settled, in terms of the zodiac, it shows approximately 20000 years worth of lineage in its current state.

                    The copyright holder of the internationally-famous Volkswagen Logo is not to be Nikolai Borg. His suit against the Wolfsburg car concern has been dismissed by the Vienna Business Court. The judges did not deny in any way that Borg had drawn up the design in the 30s and had also delivered it. But the logo itself had already existed for a while prior to this.

                    The 86-year old Borg, who comes from Sweden originally and now lives in the Tyrol, had taken action in the summer of last year against Volkswagen, because he wanted to bring about legal recognition of his copyright to the logo.

                    He was not concerned about the money but about “historical truth”, announced his lawyer. According to this statement, the graphic artist Borg had been commissioned in 1939 by the then Reich Minister Fritz Todt to prepare designs for the Volkswagen emblem. After a logo had been delivered, he was then string along with the story that things were being postponed until after the “Final Victory”. However, when Borg discovered his logo on a vehicle belonging to the Army in 1943, he began to feel he was being cut out.

                    For this he followed three guiding principles: design the best shoe for the requirements of the sport, protect the athlete from injury, and make the product durable. Today, the Adidas brand product range extends from shoes, apparel and accessories for basketball, soccer, fitness and training to adventure, trail and golf. The company's clothing and shoe logo designs typically feature three parallel stripes, and this same motif is incorporated into Adidas's current official logo. For years the only symbol associated with Adidas was the trefoil (flower) logo design. The 3 leaves symbolize the Olympic spirit, linked to the three continental plates as well as the heritage and history of the brand. The "Trefoil" was adopted as the corporate logo design in 1972. In 1996, it was decided that the Trefoil corporate identity would only be used on heritage products.

                    The new logo, released in September 2009 changes the font and also improves on the 3-dimensional aspect of the rings.

                    The first Coca-Cola logo was created by John Pemberton's partner and bookkeeper, Frank Mason Robinson, in 1885. Thinking that the two Cs would look well in advertising, it was Robinson who came up with the name and chose the logo’s distinctive cursive script.

                    We can’t talk about Aston Martin without mentioning James Bond. In 1959, Ian Fleming put his super spy James Bond in an Aston Martin DB Mark III. When it was made into a movie in 1964, Bond drove an updated, supersleek silver Aston Martin DB5 (complete with machine gun, passenger ejector seat, and revolving number plates!)

                    In the first flush of enterprise, flitting from one opportunity to another, they chanced upon the pedal-cycle trade. Little did they know then that it was the beginning of the making of a legend.

                    The Nike "Swoosh" is a design created in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at Portland State University. She met Phil Knight while he was teaching accounting classes and she started doing some freelance work for his company, Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS).

                    BRS needed a new brand for a new line of athletic footwear it was preparing to introduce in 1972. Knight approached Davidson for design ideas, and she agreed to provide them, charging a rate of $2 per hour.

                    In June 1971, Davidson presented a number of design options to Knight and other BRS executives, and they ultimately selected the mark now known globally as the Swoosh. Davidson submitted a bill for $35 for her work. (In 1983, Knight gave Davidson a gold Swoosh ring and an envelope filled with Nike stock to express his gratitude.)

                    The logo represents the wing of the Greek Goddess.The Nike logo is a classic case of a company gradually simplifying its corporate identity as its frame increases. The company's first logo appeared in 1971, when the word "Nike," the Greek goddess of victory, was printed in orange over the outline of a checkmark, the sign of a positive mark. Interestingly, German sports car manufacturer Porsche, from Stuttgart, borrowed its prancing horse logo from the city's emblem. Furthermore astonishing: Stuttgart is an over the centuries modified version of Stutengarten (an ancient german word for "Gestüt", translated into english as mare garden or stud farm, into italian as "scuderia").

                    On June 17, 1923, Enzo Ferrari won a race at the Savio track in Ravenna, and there he met the Countess Paolina, mother of Baracca. The Countess asked that he use the horse on his cars, suggesting that it would grant him good luck, but it the first race at which Alfa would let him use the horse on Scuderia cars was eleven years later, at SPA 24 Hours in 1932. Ferrari won. Ferrari left the horse black as it had been on Baracca's plane however, he added a yellow background because it was the symbolic color of his birthplace, Modena. The prancing horse has not always identified the Ferrari brand only: Fabio Taglioni used it on his Ducati motorbikes. Taglioni's father was in fact a companion of Baracca's and fought with him in the 91st Air Squad, but as Ferrari's fame grew, Ducati abandoned the horse this may have been the result of a private agreement between the two brands. The prancing horse is now a trademark of Ferrari.

                    In Jan 2011, Starbucks released a new version of the logo with a couple of big changes and some subtle changes as well. The two major changes made to the logo are

                    They removed the name of the company “Starbucks Coffee”. Their intention behind this maybe to expand the brand to beyond coffee. They have been talking about expanding into breakfast and there was also talk of a Bar/Lounge concept. This makes sense if they want to expand but maybe they should have kept the name “Starbucks” and removed “Coffee”.
                    They also removed the circle around the Siren and the logo now features just the Siren.

                    Starbucks Cup Controversy

                    Some American Christians are outraged with the Starbucks coffee chain because of their christmas cup. According to them, the red cup, which does not have any of the traditional Christmas symbols, is an “anti-Christian” act. The chain has offices worldwide. The storm caused by the coffee cup now counts with the support of Christians from other countries and a few famous people, such as businessman and host Donald Trump, who defended the boycott of the brand. As if pine trees, candles, colorful balls and Santa were actually Christian symbols.

                    If the problem these people have with Starbucks is that the cup does not have Christian symbols on Christmas, it’s ironic that they’re not upset with the company’s logo, which represents an entity that is absolutely not Christian. It’s a mermaid known as Melusine, a “spirit of water”. In African culture, the same image appears in representations of Yemojá (Yemanja in Brazil), when depicted with two tails.

                    Over the years, the company changed their logo a bit so that it would be more presentable. The original logo image was quite unattractive, with her breasts exposed and in a pornographic pose, with her tails spread apart taken from an illustration in a German book printed in 1480. Over the years, she had some liposuction, plastic surgery, tossed her hair over her breasts… a legitimate makeover that transformed her into something friendlier and more politically correct. However, if you notice the sides… the tails are still there. And she continues to wear the crown of “Queen of the Sea” on her head. After all, why is a mermaid being used as the symbol of a coffee shop?

                    This question is so common that the company’s website has already published an answer. The inspiration for the name and logo came from its owners’ dream of “paying homage to the seafaring history of coffee”. The name of the coffee shop was taken from a character in Moby Dick, Mr. Starbuck, who was the first mate on board the Pequod. So they created a coffee shop with the name of a male character and gave it a mermaid logo… Does that make sense? No! There aren’t even any mermaids in the book.

                    In an interview, the designer responsible for the logo said: “It’s a metaphor for the allure of caffeine, the sirens who lured sailors onto the rocks”. Strange metaphor, since, in myths, mermaids lured in sailors so they would smash their ships onto the rocks… So, should this be a warning to customers to keep away from caffeine before it kills them? Their website tries to embellish, “Terry Heckler found the perfect metaphor for the ‘siren song’ of coffee that lures us cupside.” It does not make much sense to want to sell coffee by using this comparison. If the siren song was intended to make the sailors lose all control, using it as a metaphor for the product is almost anti-marketing. So what is the purpose of this mermaid?

                    We cannot confirm that the logo’s creators knew they were worshiping an entity, but in all cultures, since ancient times, beings that were half human, half fish (or, in some cases, serpent) are the representation of the same deity, which has different names and genres: among the Canaanites and Philistines, Atargatis, Derketo and Dagon (the same image God made fall and break before the Ark of the Covenant, when it was taken by the Philistines) Oannes in Babylon Matsyāṅganā, in India Mixoparthenos, in Greece Kianda, in Angola Melusine and Lorelei, in Europe Ningyo, in Japan Yemojá, in Africa Yemanja, in Brazil, among other names in these and other places.

                    The female deities in this list are also called “Queen of the Sea” or “Mother of the Waters”, worshiped as fertility goddesses. Here, the official representation of this entity wears a dress to syncretize better with Catholic images and hide the worship to this entity, but the representations bearing her tail also appear quite frequently.

                    The legends and her appearance have changed over time, each culture develops its own traditions, but the spirit it represents remains the same. The same spirit of Atargatis, Melusine, Dagon and Yemanja are revered with a mermaid image.

                    The most incoherent part of this story is that none of those outraged Christians questioned (or at least found it strange) the presence of a pagan goddess waving her two tails, right before their noses, on the coffee cups they love so much. On the contrary, they are coming together to complain that the cup doesn’t have enough pagan symbols on it!

                    Unfortunately, the “siren song” of our time, the spirit that involves this world, has blinded many Christians to the point where they no longer understand what God considers important. It is much easier to cling to traditions and confuse them with Christianity, because it requires no sacrifice, there is no price to pay. On the other hand, it does not bring any benefits to anyone.

                    For those who are looking in on this pseudo-Christian movement against the red cup, it just seems like religious fanaticism, with no direction or purpose, which only vaccinates people against true Christianity. I guarantee that Jesus would never have wasted His time protesting to have a jolly old man standing next to Yemanja on the Starbucks cup.


                    The Invention of Logo

                    History has witnessed a world of famous logos. Some of the logos are so famous that they will be always remembered. This process of highlighting business image is not new. It has been practiced for ages.

                    The word logo means a name, symbol or trademark, which is designed for easy recognition. It all started with a cipher consisting of a single letter, and later a design or mark consisting of two or more letter intertwined.

                    Greece is a country of symbols. It is famous for its mythical symbols that war used to describe the history and lives of pharaohs and his decuples. Archeological survey shows that many early Greek and roman coins bear the monograms or logos of rulers. The most famous imprint on the coin is the sacred monogram, which is formed by the conjunction of the first two Greek letters of XR, S, T, O and S, (Christ). Even the hub ages were enormously productive in inventing cipher for religious, creative, and marketable use.

                    It was in the thirteenth century traders started using designs, which evolve from plain cipher to trademark for trader and merchants. Some of the premature exemplar of logo design are goldsmith’s marks, masons marks, watermarks. Logos were created according to the jobs.

                    Who would not know this very popular logo? This is one favorite amongst a list of known restaurants.

                    The McDonald's Golden Arches logo was introduced in 1962. It was created by Jim Schindler to resemble new arch shaped signs on the sides of the restaurants. He merged the two golden arches together to form the famous 'M' now recognized throughout the world. Schindler's work was a development of the stylized 'v' logo sketched by Fred Turner, which was conceived as a more stylish corporate symbol than the Speedee chef character that had previously been used.                     Simple, Fluid and Fast. These are the words used to describe the “Swoosh” in the Nike logo that has become one of the most recognized symbols in the world. The first Nike logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for just $35. Phil Knight, founder of Blue Ribbon Sports, Inc., hired Davidson to design a logo for a shoe stripe.                     Originally, the mark was referred to as ‘the strip’ but was later changed to ‘Swoosh’ to describe the fibers used in Nike shoes. In the spring of 1972, the first shoe with the Nike SWOOSH Logo was introduced. Later, the Nike logo got registered as a trademark in 1995 and has become the corporate identity of Nike Inc.                     Adidas was founded in 1924 in Germany by two bothers Adi and Rudolf Dassler. The company was first named Dassler shoes and later became Adidas. By the Dassler shoes being seen in the Olympics this really helped the company get it’s name known. However, in 1948 Rudolf Dassler leaves to start his own company which is now known as Puma. Once Rudolf left his brother came up with the famous three stripes logo and changed the name to Adidas.The 3 stripes were created to keep the foot stable, but ended up being the logo. Throughout the years Adidas was seen in the Olympics, and it was the leading brand making their shoes highly sought after by Olympic athletes. In 1978, Adi Dassler passed at age 78 and his wife Kathe ran the company. Six years later Kathe passed and the company was left for their son Horst Dassler to run, and three years later Horst passed at age 51.                     Starbucks
                    Starbucks Corporation is a coffeehouse chain based in the United States. Named after a character in the novel Moby Dick, it is the largest coffeehouse company in the world, with 7521 self-operated and 5647 licensed stores in 39 countries. The current company logo, modeled after a 15th century Norse woodcut, is a mixoparthenos, or "twin-tailed mermaid, or siren as she's known in Greek mythology. The company and the logo have an interesting history.

                    Starbucks was founded in Seattle, Washington, in 1971 as a local coffee bean roaster and retailer called Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spices. Howard Schultz joined the company in 1982 and was inspired on a trip to Italy to develop a similar espresso bar and coffeehouse culture in the United States. To advance the concept, he founded the company Il Giornale three years later. In 1987, Schultz purchased Starbucks, merged it with Il Giornale, and renamed the company Starbucks Corporation. The logo on the left is that of the Il Giornale company. As you can see, the Il Giornale logo is somewhat similar to Starbucks logo i.e being circular and having a band.

                    The original logo, as seen on the left, the Starbucks siren was topless and had a fully-visible double fish tail. The original logo has raised some controvery because of the bare chest, but the logo continues to appear on some of the products like the Starbucks Anniversary Blend 1 lb coffee bags. Both the original logos seem to be perfect on wooden crates.


                    In the second version, her chest was covered by her flowing hair, but her navel was still visible, and the fish tail was cropped slightly. The logo also inherited the stars from the Il Giornale logo.


                    In the current version, her navel and chest are not visible at all, and only vestiges remain of the fish tails.
